Painting update

In between running the latest Franco Prussian War battle, I've been trying to get a little painting done as I prepare for the next game in the campaign. So first up was a few extra buildings from Battlescale in their 10mm range. For the latest game I've had to use a few buildings that were too early for the period. These were done to rectify that, though the watermill is more suited to an American theatre.

I've also been adding to the FPW collection. First up was some spare mounted figures I had left over and a mounted Divisional leader. As the cavalry brigades are generally of mixed horse I can simply add these two stands to the existing brigades.

And lastly was a start on the infantry regiments for the Hessian Division. Thankfully they are equipped the same as their Prussian counterparts, but they do have their own distinctive flags. So the 1st and 2nd infantry regiments are done. They are smaller than the Prussians as they are only fielding two battalions instead of the normal three. The figures as usual are from Outpost/Reiver castings.

I've already got the next batch of figures prepped and undercoated. They are a third Hessian regiment, Hessian cavalry, a French infantry regiment and some Chasseurs.

More prep and other things

As the Marston Moor game draws closer as I started thinking about a couple of fields around the 2 villages to try and break up the table a little. Previously I've just used some shaped pieces of felt of various colours which have worked fine. So as a trial I took a couple of the spare pieces I had, a dark brown and lime green to try and 'jazz' them up. I first tried to added watered down paint in various shades of either green or brown but was not really happy with the outcome. I then remembered some old mixed flock I had and decided to give each field a very rough coat of PVA glue then covered in flock. I wasn't too bothered if some areas were missed. Once the excess was shaken off i then added some static grass around the edges with a few tufts scattered across the fields. The results are in. Not 100% sure of them, but better than just plain sheets of felt.

Think I prefer the one on the dark brown base.  Not sure if I will have time to get the other pieces done as they are at the club. While these were drying I finished off the last 4 pieces of hedge that I think I need. Done pretty much the same as the last batch.

The other bits I completed were the 20 dismounted dragoons for Simon and a 10mm Battlescale church which will come in handy for ACW/AWI games in the future.

Now just got a couple of civilians to finish before Saturday and the frame guns for Simon.

Project is a go

As I've been putting the finishing touches to the last 5 mounted commanders for Simon (just some highlights to do), it was time to kick start the Marston Moor project. I decided to prep 2 sprues of Covenanter infantry ready for painting. I'll be able to crack on with these over the next week or so. Also for a bit of inspiration I'm putting on an ECW game at the club on Thursday. This normally helps me focus on the figures needed. In the meantime I painted up the last of the building I'll need for the game. Just 3 more I picked up from Pendraken miniatures.

Definitely not my best work, but the'll be fine mixed in with the rest of the collection. I'm pretty sure this brings me up to 16 buildings.

First Covenanters and Buildings

Just a quick post as I managed to get a few more things completed this morning. First up is the first of the Covenanters I need, 2 regiments of Harquebusiers. Not lancers this time, though the other 4 regiments I need will be when they get done. The figures are all from Alternative armies and 1 officer from Peter Pig. Went for a quite uniform approach and buff jackets instead of breastplates.

The other addition was a mounted officer from the new Plastic sprue and a pair of light guns from Peter Pig. I just need some static grass to arrive to complete the bases.

I also decided to go with 10mm buildings for this project. I always find going done a scale helps villages and towns actually look like one and not just a couple of buildings. I went with the Battlescale range sold by Pendraken miniatures. They are lovely models and painted up in no time at all. I ordered a mix of stone and timber framed buildings to represent the villages of Tockwith and Long Marston on the flanks of the battlefield. The advantge of these type a buildings is I can use them for a number of periods.

Mitch is also looking into a 3d printing a few more just to add a bit of variety. And the good news is the collection all gets to be used at the club on Thursday for their first game and a chance to try out the rules.

Last of my Soviet armour

Finally got the last 2 T80bs completed. This rounds out my Soviet armour. Once again I went with the Tri-colour camo scheme.

I think I'll field these with the T72s as a seperate, front line Soviet force. So all 11 tanks together.

At some point I will need to add some infantry and support vehicles to the force.

T80B Test model

To add some extra fire power to my Russian forces, Mitch printed off 3 T80Bs for me. As these are the 'elite' of the army I wanted something different to just a shade of green. A quick browse on the internet came up with a tri-colour camo scheme of green, brown and blue. Rather eye catching so I decided to try and replicate it. These are the results.

I'm very happy with the results and have already started on the remaining 2 tanks. I may even ask Mitch for a few support vehicles to add to the force.

2 x T72b's

Just a quick post as I try to clear the painting table. We have 2 more T72Bs, both are 3d prints provided by Mitch. I've also got 3 T80s I am trying to get finished.

So I might squeeze one more post in before the New Year.

10mm Soviets and Festive Greetings

Firstly I would just like to wish all my followers and there families a Merry Christmas and happy New Year.

So back to painting eventually. I managed to add some more tanks to my 10mm Soviets for SDTTRR. These are 3d prints I obtained from Mitch. First up is 4 T72As

There were also 2 T72Bs and a wrecked model to use as either scenery or an objective.

I did realise a mistake after I completed the models, I had used a lighter shade of green. Quite noticeable against the others I've done. Just have to use as a different regiment.

A mixed bag

Once more a bit of a mixed bag as I clear some half finished models off of the painting table. First up is 2 commanders for my 10mm army. These were much nicer to paint compared to the strips of figures.

Next up was a 3d printed donated by one of the club as he tried out his new printer. It is a Constuctora armoured car. More than useful on the gaming table and not vad gor a free model.

Lastly I made a start on some Bolsheviks for some Back of Beyond gaming. The infantry are all from Copplestone miniatures. The HMG team is from Blacktree. It is meant for WW2 NKVD, but a little filing of the hats and they fit right in.

I do need to source some flags for the Russian Civil War. I've also got another 8 of these on the basing table. Not a bad start and will nearly have enough to take on the British.

Eclectic painting update

I've made a conscious effort over the last couple of days to clear the painting table of some half finished models. First up is some figures for Star Wars, namely an Imperial officer, which is a 3D printed model and some Rebel fleet troopers from the Imperial Assault game.

Next up is a commander for my Carlists. It is a simple WW1 British officer with a head swap. Think he was originally from Renegade miniatures.

There was then two more bases of 10mm Chaos Thugs to complete. Not sure if I have mentioned before, but I do not like painting these. Still that's 6 bases done and just 4 to go.

Lastly I have been mulling over some 1920s gaming in Central Asia. I know I can use the Afghans already in my collection. I also have some RCW Reds that also need painting up. But first I decided to re-purpose some old WW1 British figures I had lying in a box. These are for the Western theatre, but will do for me. Should have enough for 3 sections, a HMG team and an artillery piece. A good starter force. So here is the first 10 models re-painted in a khaki uniform.

As I am using existing models with just a few new additions, I believe I am keeping my promise of no new projects. Still 20 more infantry to go.

More 10mm madness

Well I officially dislike painting 10mm strips of figures. Individuals figures are fine but these definitely do not float my boat. However I did commit to painting them up so must soldier on. So finally managed to complete another 4 bases of infantry,1 of warriors and 3 of the thugs. Just another 6 bases then I can start on the cavalry, chariots and commanders.

The 3 additional bases of thugs have been given green shields to unify the unit, the next 2 will need black shields to match the first base I did.

These are definitely of the look good at 3 feet away on the tabletop. Not for close up inspection. Did I mention I don't like painting them.
