Prussian Landwehr

After picking up a few figures from Reiver Castings I made some progress on the Prussian Landwehr. This is the first of 2 regiments I need to complete. Especially with the upcoming campaign games. The Landwehr regiments muster out at 2 battalions each, or 6 bases for Fire and Fury.

It was very pleasing getting these done, almost felt like a proper painter again. Though I have noticed some issues with my eyesight on these 15mm figures. Unfortunately backed up by a recent eye test, just another week to wait for my new glasses.

I did also complete a few extra figures for the Barons War. These were also picked up at the Border Reiver show. 3 extra peasant spearmen and a blacksmith from Reaper miniatures. Just need a smithy now for the village.

Next in the painting queue are a few more Dwarves and some 15mm Punic War figures.

Painting and a bit of gaming

A bit of a mix bag on the painting front, I find I'm just painting whatever I fancy. First up is some more Dwarves from Oathmark. A few extra warriors and a number of character figures from the Oathmark metal range.

The other figures I painted were 6 medium Italian infantry for the Punic wars. These are the second base I needed to complete a unit for Midgard. The figures are all from Essex miniatures.

These last figures were inspired by a recent game of Midgard at the club, where the Romans commanded by myself and Sean were given a rather bloody nose by the Carthaginians commanded by Robbo and Mitch. The Carthaginians had to hold a hill and received an extra reputation point each turn they held it. Even though our heavy infantry managed to get up the hill and begin forcing the Carthaginians back, our right flank was turned by Carthaginian and Numidian cavalry. A pretty historic outcome. I only managed a few photos as we were concentrating on just getting the rules right.

We have a re-match next week and hopefully a bit of revenge is due. I am also busy planning a follow up to our Franco Prussian campaign. This time the plan is for 3 smaller 1 vs 1 game, that will then determine the set up for a large battle with up to seven players. So far each player has been assigned their troops, made up nominally of at least 1 Corps and some support units, hence each force is not equal and the 1 vs 1 battles will not be balanced. Wish me luck on planning this.

Dwarves for Warhost

I've been looking around for a bit of inspiration to get my painting mojo back and I think I found it. I picked up the Warhost supplement for Baron's War. This is a fantasy supplement using the same mechanics which I find enjoyable. It will also allow me to use my extensive collection of orcs and elves. However I fancied putting together a Dwarf patrol using the Oathmark range. I picked up a few individual sprues and a couple of the metal blisters to make a start. The sprues are a mix of the light infantry, warriors and heavy infantry.

I have deliberately gone for a limited colour scheme to keep the patrol uniformed. I even tried to depict mountains on some of the shields. I even used some spear arms from the fireforge figures to add some spears to the light infantry instead of the two handed weapons.

The Patrol so far

Dwarf spears

Heavy infantry

Dwarf warriors

Dwarf rangers or scouts

Not a bad start with 20 figures completed this weekend. I have another 9 in various stages of painting. I now just need to read the rules and try and get a game in sometime.

The Lord, The Lady, The Lover and The Rogue

Just back from the Border Reiver show. The game seemed well received with plenty of visitors and lots of conversations being had. We were all set up for the show starting at 10am, we managed to get through nearly 2 games, though I only took photos of the first.

The Lady and her escort

Thom's magnificent Keep

The Lord emerges with part of his retinue

The Lover arrives

The Rogue emerges from the woods

Foot and mounted serjeants clash in the village

More outlaws start to engage the escort

The Lord's retinue rushing slowly to his Lady

Outlaws see off the mounted serjeants

The Lover's retinue move through the village

Outlaws ransack a building

And another one goes up in flames

More burning buildings

The escort meets up with troops from the Lord's retinue

The Lord and Lady united

The end

The smoke markers from Thom were superb for highlighting the burning buildings, those and his 3d printed keep were popular talking points.

I did mange to get around the show to pick up a small amount of loot.

Some second hand peasant spearman to expand the retinue. A Blacksmith and a dwarf warrior from Reaper Bones, some Franco Prussian War Landwher, enough for two small regiments. I also pick up some brushes for Mitch. Overall a good day

A few more Welshmen

So this weekend I managed to get some paint on the last of the prepped Welsh figures I have for the Barons war. I do have a few more figures left and even managed to get them prepped today and hopefully get some paint on them next week. These 5 figures are all from Footsore miniatures, a foot knight and 4 archers.

As I mentioned in the last post I had a pair of foxes from Warbases to finish off. I quickly got these done and then decided to make a den for them. A few stones from the garden, a bit of modelling putty and it was done. It didn't actually take very long to do and will look good hidden in the woods for the game at Border Reiver.

With just 2 weeks to Border Reiver, I am just about ready. Just need to sort some display bits and pieces out and we'll be ready to go.

Oh Deer

Still not much going on as I struggle to get any enthusiasm to get anything done. I've spent some time mulling over why I can seem to focus on anything and I think it boils down to simple fatigue. I've been on the same project for a while, Barons War and with a display game ready for Border Reiver and I think I really need a change. With nothing new on the horizon I ordered some chariots for the Trojan war, I may try and get back into this and give them a go using Midgard. I may also dig out the 15mm Punic Wars stuff I still need to get painted.

In the meantime I did manage to get a couple of things done, some wildlife for the Border Reiver game to be hidden in the woods. These are some deer and wild boar from Warbases.

These were quick and easy to do and will help bring the table to life. There are also a pair of foxes that I need to get finished. The only other figures I managed to paint were some extra Welsh warriors. 2 from Footsore, the other 3 are plastic Gripping beast dark age welsh with various head and shield swap. They look like they will mix in.

So nearly 2 months in and my output is well down, normally I'd have around 2-300 figures done by now. I'm currently at about 25%. I'm hoping things pick up soon.
