A mixed bag and the Last of the Quar

As I hinted yesterday I was getting a little Quar'd out, so I decided to start mixing in some figures from the Heroquest boxed set to try and mix things up a little. So here are a batch of the fantasy figures, including Orcs, Chaos warriors, a demon and Necromancer.

These were all quite quick and easy to paint up. I think the Necromancer is my favourite in this batch. I had  a look in the boxed set, all I have left to paint is the 4 adventures, 2 more chaos warriors, 6 goblins and then the furniture.

The next model I completed was a pig/animal pen from Warbases. A pretty basic structure but will see lots of use across a multitude of periods, including the Quar.


Next was the last of my Quar figures. These were 3d printed bodies provided by Mitch. I simply equipped them from the spare arms I had left over from the various sprues in the collection. So an extra 5 trench raiders which I can either operate as a second small unit or combine to a full strength squad.



I think I'll try and get the rest of the Heroquest stuff done and then back to the Punic Wars.

A night raid - Clash of Rhyflers

So on Thursday night I did a trial run of a possible scenario that we could use at the Border Reiver show. The game would have markers to represent the raider until they were spotted by one of the sentries, who could then sound an alarm to summon the rest of the garrison. Some of the markers were dummies. The defender was allowed to place 3 sentries, we only had 2 in the first game and it definitely wasn't enough. The sentries could only spot markers within 18 inches and would require a skill check, normal shooting modifiers were applied to this roll. 

The attacking Coftyrans were made up of two small squads. The first was a squad of 5 trench raiders including a Yawdral. They also had charges for blowing up the supplies. The second unit was a squad of 5 rangers made up of a Yawdral, 2 marksquars and 2 rhyflers.

The defending Crusaders had a standard squad of 10 rhyflers who were barracked in the buildings and tent. They also had 2 sentries, later increased to 3. 

In the first game the defenders were blind failing lots of spotting rolls which allowed the trench raiders to get within close range of their target, hence why we went for an extra sentry in the second game.  They quickly got into the compound, set their charges and most of them managed to get out of the blast range when the explosives went off.

In the second game the rangers were quickly spotted, however it didn't seem to hamper the Coftyrans. Their 2 marksquar began to pick off Crusaders at will. As they closed with the compound the Trench raiders with their automatic weapons wreaked havoc. By the end of turn 3 all of the Crusaders were out of action. A second victory to the attackers, but 2 very different games. Need to make a few amendments especially around firing ranges due to it being a night attack, also may need extra counterand split the attackers up into smaller groups.












On the painting front I did finish off the last of my Coftyrans, until Mitch prints me the 5 extra trench raider bodies to build up the squad to full strength. So 3 more rangers done, a second RCO field gun and the trench raiders.

More Coftyrans for the 52nd

As I alluded to in my last post, I was planning on re-painting the 1st squad of Coftyrans I had done in a red uniform. So after a game at the club on Thursday I picked them up and got to work. So here they are in their new uniforms to match in with the rest of the regiment.

I also picked up a boxed set of the Specialists from Wayland games (got to love a discount). I quickly put together a RCO field gun with crew and a couple of Marksquar. I did differentiate the facings for these, blue for the artillery and green for the snipers. I do plan to create a small scout squad of 5 figures of which the 2 snipers will be part of, come in handy for some scenario driven games.

I've now got the rest of the box built, to give me a second RCO field gun, 3 scouts and 5 trench raiders. The remaining RCO field gun will probably be added to the Gwynt.

As previously mention I got another game at the club, this time against Thom using the Fidwog against the Toulmore. It was hard fought and a bloody affair with honours even at the end. A few photos had no report as I was concentrating on getting rules right.

Coftyrans - 52nd Stormwyr regiment

So despite already painting up Crusaders, Toulmore, Fidwog and a few Gwynt I decided that the Coftyrans needed some attention. I had originally painted up a squad of 10 figures for games of Rhyflers, but I was never really happy with the uniform colour I chose. The deep red just wasn't for me. So if I was going to expand them, then a new colour scheme was required. Taking a little inspiration from my Franco Prussian war project I went with a dark grey, almost a Prussian look. I really like how these have turned out. The more I look at them I think the first squad I did in red will get some nice new uniforms to join the regiment.

So here they are the first 20 figures or 2 squads for the 52nd Regiment. I gave them the moniker of Stormwyr, it's welsh for stormtroopers.





Thankfully Mitch provided 10 3d printed bodies which allowed me to put together the second squad and use up all of the spare weapons and arms from the sprues. I do intend to expand these so that they can compete against my Crusaders. Once I repaint the first squad I will have 3 in total, I'll add a unit of Trench raiders, some snipers and a couple of RCO field guns. Just need to pick up one of the Specialist boxed sets and ask Mitch to print a couple of bodies and an Is-caertan to lead the force.

Yet more Quar

So work has been continuing on with the Quar. Trying to get as many figures painted as possible as well as getting in a couple of practice games at the club. to make sure we have the rules right. The first game pitted my Toulmore marines against so Coftyrans, who brought 2 tractors with them. Still Mitch and his unlucky dice rolls came to bear, he lost both of his tractors and had to cede the game.

The second practice game had me umpiring so that Mitch could face off against Thom using my Fidwog, while Thom took command of the Crusaders. The stars of the game were the Fidwog Fydos who caused havoc amongst the Crusader infantry. The Fidwoggers managed to hang on for the win as the Crusader Ailthean tractor was beginning to dominate the table.












Painting wise I managed to finish enough Rhyflers to complete a squad of Gwynt, perfect for the small 300 point games. I have made a start on another Coftyran regiment as I was never happy with the colours of the first squad I did, they may even get re-painted to match the new rhyflers. Lastly for the Fidwog, I added a third squad as well as a Shaedyn tractor, giving them some additional firepower. This was printed for me by Mitch as they had just been released.









Now I just need to complete another batch of Coftyrans to round out 2 squads. Mitch provided 10 3d printed bodies, I just used the spare weaponsfrom the original sprues to equip them.
