Quick Update

Even though the painting front has slowed slightly as I begin moving my wargames gear from the spare room into a shed. I did manage to complete the last 2 units of Jannisarries, too late for the game at Micks. The figures are from Legio Herioco, depicted in campaign dress. Very nice figures.

The only other work I've managed to finish is some 28mm walling for my Border Reiver project. Got 6 pieces finished so far with another 6 under construction.

These are quite simple to make. I just used some modelling sticks with a layer of polly-filla. I then added a few layers of aquarium stones. They look effective enough.

Additional Jannisarries

With a game arranged with Mick next weekend to test out some rule adaptions for Irregular armies of the late 17th century, l decided to add a couple more regiments of Jannisarries to my force. The figures are mainly Roundway with the officers from Friekorps.

These bring me up to 9 regiments. I do have enough figures for 2 more regiments but in campaign dress. Not sure if I have the time to get them done.

More Ottoman Turks

With a game coming up against Mick and his Russians, I found the impetus to complete the last of the mounted figures for this army. They're still a handful of infantry to sort out.

So here is the last regiment of Sipahi.  Like the last unit I completed, these are the old Mikes Models. I loved painting these and tempted to get more. I again went for a slightly regimented look, sticking to red and white.

Lastly was some additional commanders to lead the army. These are a mix of Mikes Models and Roundway figures.

So that just about completes the army. Made of the following horse:
10 regiments of Sipahi
3 regiments of Beslu
6 regiments of Dellis
4 regiments of Wallachians
2 regiments of Akinji

The infantry is less impressive:
7 regiments of Jannisarries
7 regiments of Azabs
1 regiment of Tefuki
10 regiments of Irregulars.

I think I need some artillery.

Back to Ottomans

After a slight diversion on some fantasy models for Rangers of Shadow Deep, its back to painting more Ottomans. I never really stopped painting them, just added a colour here and there till now their completion. First up is 2 more units of irregular infantry from Roundway.

These guys will not be much use in the musket era, but their numbers will hopefully overwhelm the enemy.

Next is the last of my Dellis. 2 more regiments from the old Mikes models range. Not exactly historically accurate but I like them.

With these done, there is 1 more regiment of Sipahi's to complete and a few regiments of Jannisarries.

More Ottomans

After focusing for a while on the mounted troops l decided to switch to the infantry to give their numbers a boost. These are both units of Azabs, 1 with muskets and the other armed for melee. The figures are mainly Roundway with a few spare Mikes Models added to make up the unit.

I also had a mooch through the unpainted pile for this project. I've enough figures for 3 more cavalry regiments, 4 units of Jannisarries and 2 more Azabs. After that I'll need to make some purchases for some artillery and an Army General.

Overall quite pleased with how this army is turning out. Just need to get a game with it. Mick has offered to fight it with his Russians later in the year to try out some new rule adaptations.

Now just because I fancied, here is the cavalry so far. A good mix of heavies and lights.

Ottoman Sipahi

Yet more progress. These guys were not quite finished yesterday as needed their bases completed. They are 3 squadrons of Sipahi from Mikes Models. Always wanted to paint a unit of these and they didn't disappoint. I'll probably use them as a elite unit as I've painted them more uniform than the others.

I'm so glad I've got enough figures to paint another unit of these after I finish some infantry and more Dellis

Ottoman Allies - Wallachians and Delli's

Work has continued on my Ottoman army. This time concentrating on some of the allied cavalry. First up is 2 extra regiments on Wallachians. These are the old Mikes Models, still available from Essex miniatures.

These extra 6 squadrons bring my Wallachians up to 12.

Next was 4 squadrons of Dellis. Again these figures are the old Mikes Models. These are not as nice as more modern sculpts. I already had 2 squadrons painted so this rounds them out at 2 regiments.

With an order from Roundway newly arrived I can look to add some more infantry after i finish another regiment if Siphahi.

Ottoman Turks

At last my painting mojo seems to be returning. Over the last 2 weeks has seen a bit of progress in my Ottoman army. This also coincided with a bargain I picked up from EBay  which provided the stimulus to get things painted.

First up is 6 squadrons of Siphahi from Roundway miniatures. Seemed to paint up better than the last batch I did.

Next up were 6 squadrons of Akinji, also from Roundway. Now these I did not enjoy painting, but persevered to get them finished.

Next were 2 units if irregular infantry armed with melee weapons. These were part of the Ebay purchase and are the old Mikes Models.

Next were 2 squadrons of Wallachian cavalry, again Mikes Models. These were added to the 4 squadrons I had painted up over 30 years ago.

Lastly was 6 new commanders. A mixture of Roundway and Mikes Models. I've also included a group photo.

As I mentioned I picked up a bargain from EBay which included 19 packs of Mikes Models Turks. All for £10. They include Siphahi, Dellus, Wallachians, Infantry and officers. Keep me going for a while.

GNW Russians and Turks

Finally got the basing done on these units. The first are 2 units of Jannisarries from Friekorps. I went for the more traditional blue coats on these. The figures are pretty basic and I've had them in the lead pile for years. Still they painted up okay.

Next up was 2 battalions of the Russian infantry regiment Belgorodski. The figures are from Dixons.

Now I can get back to completing the next Swedish cavalry regiment, 6 squadrons of the Livonian Adelsfana.

Ottoman Delli light cavalry

Sometimes you get some figures and when you take a good look at the detail they fill you with trepidation. How can you do justice to them. The Delli light cavalry from Legio Heroica are just such models. I picked them up as part of an EBay deal. They already had a black undercoat. Now it's a long time since I used a black undercoat so these guys have sat at the end of the painting queue while I concentrated on the Sipahi and Jannisarries.

I did look a some of these images on the internet and my heart sank. These guys are colourful with the furs and feathers. Now I've never been able to get feathers right, especially on eagles and such like for fantasy games.

So this last week I took the plunge and started to paint the first 6 figures and then quickly moved onto the other 6. These guys were actually a joy to paint. Wish I'd done them sooner.

First 3 squadrons

2nd 3 squadrons

So that's 2 More regiments of light cavalry for my Ottoman army. I do have 2 regiments of Akinja to add to bring the light cavalry up to 6 regiments. Still not enough when I've got 9 heavy regiments with 2 more to paint. Think some Tartars might be useful additions.
