AWI British Legion

After making some good progress on my American forces, I decided to make a start on some Loyalists. The units I have chosen are the British legion and Emmericks Chasseur.  This is because they both contain both foot and mounted units.

First up is the foot companies for the British Legion. I used the figures from the Perry plastic Brits. There isn't much data available for these guys as they are somewhat overshadowed by their mounted arm. There are discrepancies with the head gear, some stating that they wore a light infantry hat. I went with a floppy hat as it fits the southern theatre better.

Next up is a completed British office to lead my loyalists. He is in the cut down coat and is from the Perry metal range.

I have also completed another Continental regiment, but I'm awaiting an order from Warbases to restock on bases. I have also put in a small order with Perry miniatures for some mounted militia. 4 of these will be used as a small unit of loyalists and the other 2 will eventually be used as the start of some American militia cavalry.

AWI 6th Virginia Continentals

These are the 4th completed unit of Continentals for this project. Just leaves 2 more to complete. This time I chose the 6th Virginia, mainly because they are in grey coats with green facings. A bit different from blue coats. Once again the figures are all from the Perry plastics. This time I went for a more relaxed marching pose.

The flag for this unit is from Maverick Models. I went for the simple Betty Rose. Next up is a couple of stands of riflemen hiding behind some resin baricades design I picked up off EBAY.

As I was reorganising the figures into storage box I couldn't help but take a couple of photos. Quite happy with my efforts this month.

I think I'll have to pick up some more militia, mounted officers and at least 1 Artillery piece, then I should have a decent force for our club games.

AWI 2nd South Carolina Continentals

As I'm in a bit of a painting groove I managed to get these guys done rather quickly. I chose this regiment as they are reported to wear caps as well as white hunting shirts alongside there Blue coats. The figures I used are mainly Perry plastics, the exception being the figures in hunting shirt and tricorn. These are from Perry's metal range. For the white hunting shirts I went for a mix of white and cream for added variety. The flag once again is from Maverick Models.

I have also made some progress on a couple of bases of riflemen and a officer to lead my loyalists when I eventually get them done.

AWI 3rd Maryland Continentals

Work has continued on my AWI project with the second regiment of Continentals completed, this time the 3rd Maryland. This time I mixed in a few of the Perry metal continental figures in shirts. The flag like the last is from Maverick Models.

Apart from the infantry I have also started work on some mounted brigade commanders. I've realised I picked up a pack of British Generals in error. Not to be daunted I used the one in formal dress and painted him up to lead my Maryland brigade. The two will be put aside for when I paint up some loyalists.

So here they all are , the brigade so far. I am currently painting up the 2nd South Carolina regiment to go with them.

On the march
Well not bad for about a weeks work. Just 4 more regiments to go. I will need to add an Artillery piece, some more militia and possibly a unit of dragoons.

Dragon Rampant

At the club on Thursday night we gave the Dragon Rampant rules a bit of a run out. Luckily the mechanisms are much the same as Lion Rampant as I must confess I hadn't read the rules before the game. Looking for an army to use I dusted down my Rohirrim as they hadn't seen the light of day in a long time. We set up with a 40 point game and my force was as follows.

1 unit elite riders - reduced models (Theoden) with the trustworthy rule to stop impetuous charges.
1 unit of elite riders (Theodred) with the slayer of men ability
2 units of heavy riders with bows
1 unit of light riders
2 units of light foot, 1 with mixed weapons.

Neil's force included belicose foot, lesser war beasts, flyers and spell casters.

Initial set up
The enemy
The game began with Neil advancing his mounted units and the Bellicose foot. I sent from my light and heavy riders who began firing into the enemy to reduce their numbers. Neil's light missile troops opened fire on my light foot, inflicting horrendous  casualties and destroying the unit after a failed courage test.

Approaching Belicose foot
Eventually Theodred began to move forward and charged a unit of enemy cavalry, we then realised how effective the Slayer rule was as I inflicted 12 hits and destroyed the unit. Neil's Belicose foot were drawn forward and then charged by Theodred who destroyed the unit. Neil committed his elite riders at my heavy riders, drawing the melee but reducible him your half strength. My second unit engage them and destroyed the unit. Just when I thought things were going so well my last unit of light foot came under missile fire and repeatedly failed courage tests for the rest of the game. My light riders were then caught by the lesser war beasts and given a mauling before Theodred rescued them.

Battered units
With time running out Neil's spell casters repeatedly cast befuddle on Theodred to prevent him advancing. His flying scouts also deployed to hold off my heavy riders. We called the game there and agreed a very enjoyable and fun game. Will definitely play these again.

AWI 2nd Maryland Continentals

I finally managed to get my first regiment of Continentals based up. They are all from the plastic Perry boxed set. The figures were a joy to paint and recommended. The regiment depicted is the 2nd Maryland, which had built a very good reputation during the war. The flag is from Maverick Models.

I also put in another order with Perry's for an extra command sprue and infantry in hunting shirts. That should allow me to field 5 or 6 Continental regiments.

American Militia part I

Following  yesterday's post I had rebated a handful of militia figures that I already had painted up. They were all bought from Front Rank and painted for my FIW project.

Militia company
I also painted up the blister pack from Perry miniatures and used one if the plastic figures in hunting shirt to give me a second company.

One thing I have done with the bases is use one of the dice frames I picked up from Pendraken miniatures. These are ideal for holding the dice to indicate casualties.

Here is the firing line all together. Next I'll be making a start on my first battalion of Continentals.

New Project 2016

I finally decided upon a project for this year. I was wanting something with smallish battles that could be fought on a club night, but still wanting to see regiments and Artillery etc. So I plumbed for the American Revolution. It was also good opportunity to visit Vapnartak  in York and pick up the first figures that I needed.

Show loot
As can be seen I picked up a couple of boxes of the Perry Continental infantry as well as a couple of blisters of Militia. Tom has kindly agreed to collect the British. We've decided just to use the Black Powder rules that we are familiar with, so I picked up a copy of the Rebellion supplement as well as some flags from Maverick Models.

Rebellion  and flags
Luckily I've already a small number of Militia figures I used in my FIW collection which will be rebated and mixed with the new figures.

FPW French Hussars II

These guys are the 8th regiment of Hussars that were wearing the new 1870 uniform. Again the figures are all from Outpost and painted up fairly quickly.

I also had a few spare command figures that I quickly painted up to represent the commander of XII Corps, LeBrun.

I've now got 2 more infantry regiments to paint up before I need to purchase the extra figures to complete this Corps. In the meantime  I'm  off to York for the Vapnartak show.
